CNN Hero Efren Peñaflorida, would be paying as much as 30% of his cash award worth $100,000 from CNN to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). He would pay BIR more or less 1,380,000 pesos if it is converted to peso.
According to ABS-CBNnews.com, Peñaflorida said he planned to use 90% of the money to expand his school-on-wheels project and build a permanent structure, where he can teach street kids some basic skills.
Senatorial candidate Alexander “Pinoy” Lacson described it as a “bad joke.”
He added: “Most of those cash awards are one-time awards, which their recipients should enjoy and put to good use. They are not that substantial to adversely affect the country’s fiscal position.”
“It’s tantamount to punishing Penaflorida, who has brought prestige and honor to our country. This is something that makes every Filipino sad. Guys like him are our national treasures,” said Lacson.
the price was awarded in a foreign country and also shows how a hero is made not in his homeland but somewhere else outside his country…in the philippines you are only recognized of your exemplary performance once you have shown your talent in a foreign country just like manny pacquiao, arnel pineda, charice and now efren and many more…..well this is how things are done in the philippines a country full of mess and a place so desperate to live within….
