TROPICAL STORM “BASYANG” ENTERS THE PHILIPPINES

“Basyang” (international code name Conson), intensified into a tropical storm, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) to place seven areas in Luzon under storm signal number 1.

The weather disturbance is packing maximum winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kilometers per hour. It is moving west northwest at 22 kilometers per hour.

Pagasa said residents in low-lying and mountainous areas in these provinces should be on alert for possible flashfloods and landslides.

Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains mostly in the afternoon or evening.

By Tuesday afternoon, “Basyang” is expected to be 200 kilometers north of Virac, Catanduanes. The tropical cyclone is expected to make landfall over the border of Northern Aurora and Isabela by Tuesday evening and cross Northern Luzon. By Wednesday afternoon, the storm is forecasted to be over Sinait, Ilocos Norte. It is expected to be leave land by Thursday morning.

“Basyang” is the second tropical cyclone to enter the country and the first for this year’s typhoon season.
