Stars such as Kristen Stewart, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Ellen Page, and Carey Mulligan were all rumored to play the character, but newcomer Rooney Mara was officially confirmed to play the eccentric whizzkid hacker, Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming Hollywood adaptations of Stieg Larsson‘s popular crime novel “The Millennium Trilogy.” The first film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” is due out in December 2011.
Rooney Mara, 24, appeared in a “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “The Social Network.” In “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” she will star opposite Daniel Craig (James Bond) who will play the part of Mikael Blomquist, a journalist.
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” tells the story of Mikael who cross paths with an eccentric female hacker Lisbeth to investigate a cold case – the disappearance of a 16 years old girl, 40 years ago.
“The Millennium Trilogy” is a bestselling crime novel written by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. It consist of three series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. All of these will have a hollywood movie adaptation.
Author Stieg Larsson died in November 2004 at the aged 50, left three unpublished novels that made up the trilogy, and the books became a global hit.
David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) will direct the film, shooting starts in Sweden in September.
A Swedish adaptation of the trilogy has already been done. The 2009 Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was released in the United States on March 19, 2010. The second and third film of the Swedish adaptation will be released later in 2010.
