Make and receive calls using your computer with Gmail‘s new feature called Google Voice.
Gmail‘s voice and video chat requires both people to communicate in front of their computers, but with Google Voice, a person can call directly on phones using their computer. Just like a normal phone, you can use your computer and dial a number to call.
Google Voice users can also receive calls on their PC by obtaining a free phone number from Google.
Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed for as little as $0.02 or more per minute. Skype, which charges 1.2 cents to 2.1 cents per minute for US calls, have found their latest rival through Google Voice. See Google’s rate chart here.
Google Voice is initially available to U.S. based Gmail users, but they are planning to expand their service to additional countries in the future.
