Clarion Hotel Stockholm in Sweden replaces their key with ASSA ABLOY Mobile Keys that uses a technology called Near Field Communication (NFC) to make visitors check-in, check-out, or unlock the door in the hotel by using mobile phones.
For now, Clarion Hotel lends customers mobile phones with NFC to a number of their hotel guest. The trial will last for four months. Assa Abloy, the global leader in making door locks, says it wanted to test the system before expanding it to other hotels, commercial buildings and homes. The technology called Near Field Communication (NFC) is expected to be built into smart phones.

The mobile phone key works just by holding it against the lock to unlock the door. It also aims to save time at check-in because the room key is sent to your mobile phone, no need to go to the reception, you can go straight to your room. The door locks automatically when leaving the room. When leaving the hotel, simply hold the mobile phone next to the check-out point.
The phone technology is designed to work with existing radio-enabled locks in hotels, in this way the customers who don’t have the technology in their phones can use the key cards.
