President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 60 declaring the celebration of Eid’l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) on November 16, 2010, Tuesday, a national holiday.
The proclamation was signed by the President on November 9. The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) has confirmed that the feast of Eid’l Adha falls on November 16, 2010. The date is a non-working holiday.
Eid’l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) is one of the two important feast celebrated by Muslims worldwide. The feast commemorates the act of obedience of Prophet Abraham to Allah to sacrifice his first born son Ishmael to Him, then Allah interrupted Abraham’s sacrifice and allowed him to sacrifice a ram instead of Ishmael.
Muslim families re-enacts the act of obedience of Abraham to Allah by sacrificing a ram, cow, or goat. The family eats a third of the meat, a third will be given to relatives, and a third will be given to the poor.
