The Shinmoedake Volcano located in the Kirishima mountain range on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu began erupting on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The volcano’s major eruption happens for the first time in 52 years. During the 1960′s, the volcano was used as an exterior of SPECTRE’s headquarters in the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice”, starring Sean Connery.
The Meteorological Agency has established the volcanic alert level 3 as minor eruptions continued from Shinmoedake Volcano.
More than 1,000 residents were encouraged to evacuate and warned that large stones might fall in the areas within a 3 kilometer radius from the volcano’s crater.

According to experts, the lava dome in the crater of Shinmoedake Volcano increased from 100 meters in diameter to 500 meters in diameter on Saturday, but are uncertain if the volcano could create large flows on its sides.
610 people have been evacuated but reports said that some residents are going back to their homes instead.
