Former Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes was declared dead at 8:32 a.m on Tuesday. Reyes sustained a single gunshot wound to the heart. He was reported to have committed suicide.
Reports said that Reyes was with his two children and bodyguards during his visit to his mother’s tomb at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. He asked his children and his bodyguards to leave him alone for a while. Then they heard a gunshot and saw Reyes fall.
According to reports, he used a 45-caliber pistol to shoot himself in the chest.
He was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City. Doctors tried to resuscitate Reyes for some 45 minutes but failed. Reyes was 66 years old. He is survived by his wife and 5 children.
Witnesses said that he was holding a book titled “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” by Donald Trump before committing suicide.
Reyes was supposed to testify on Tuesday, the day he died, before the House of Representatives committee hearing. He allegedly received P50 million in the “pabaon” system of AFP where AFP chiefs allegedly receive million of pesos when they retire.
