An 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan on Friday afternoon and generated a 23-foot (7-meter) monster tsunami that swept away everything like boats, houses, cars, and people.
The quake struck northeast Japan at 2:46 p.m local time, it lasted for about two minutes. The quake’s epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo. Numerous aftershocks followed, with the strongest measuring at 7.1.
Japan is used to earthquakes as it is located along “The Pacific Ring of Fire,” but Friday’s earthquake, the largest quake in the history of Japan, stunned most of the people as it was followed by a deadly tsunami.
Fires, severe flooding, and major blackouts occured across northeast Japan. A ship carrying 100 people was reportedly swept away by the killer tsunami and lots of cars were toppled like toys. Residents near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant located north of Tokyo were evacuated for fear of possible leaks. A lot of people were also trapped on top of Sendai Airport.
According to reports, more than 1,000 people are feared dead and 88,000 missing, the death toll may still climb. Google activated their person finder in Japan, this is a useful service to help people find their friends and loved ones.
After the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan, tsunami warnings were issued for at least 50 countries.
