Alyssa Campanella, a redhead beauty from California was crowned Miss USA 2011 at Sunday night’s Miss USA pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. She replaces Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih to represent the United States at this year’s Miss Universe pageant.
Campanella competed with 51 other beauties and strutted a turquoise Sherri Hill evening gown for the competition’s evening gown portion and a blue bikini with white polka dots for the swimsuit portion.
During the Q&A portion, Campanella was asked regarding the legalization of marijuana. She answered by saying that she’s a little bit against it:
“Well, I understand why that question would be asked, especially with today’s economy, but I also understand that medical marijuana is very important to help those who need it medically. I’m not sure if it should be legalized, if it would really affect, you know, with the drug war. I mean, it’s abused today, unfortunately, so that’s the only reason why I would kind of be a little bit against it, but medically it’s OK,” Campanella said.
Campanella has been competing in beauty pageants since she was 15 and began modeling at the age of 16. She represented New Jersey in Miss Teen USA 2007 where she was a runner-up. On her twitter account she describe herself as: “Born in the wrong time period.. but in this one I enjoy being in front of the camera. Model. Actress. Nerd. Redhead.”
While attending Freehold Township High School, she made honor roll every semester and held a 4.0 GPA. In 2004 and 2006 she received a national merit award from the United States Achievement Academy. She graduated high school a year early after receiving a scholarship to the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in Manhattan, where she was further trained in acting for film and television, according to her bio on her personal website.
She becomes the third Miss USA with red hair, but Campanella is a natural blonde.
Miss Tennessee Ashley Durham was the first runner-up, Madeline Mitchell, Miss Alabama, was the 2nd runner-up, and Ana Rodriguez, Miss Texas was the 3rd runner-up.
Miss Congeniality was won by Miss Kentucky Kia Ben-et Hampton, while Miss Photogenic was won by Miss Arizona Brittany Dawn Brannon.
Campanella will represent the United States at this year’s Miss Universe pageant in September 12 in Brazil where our very own Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup will compete as well.
