US McDonald’s is going to add apples to their Happy Meal in its aims to help consumers especially families and children to make nutrition-minded choices.
The Happy Meal change is included in the company’s menu evolution for the company’s “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices,” which was announced today by McDonald’s USA president Jan Fields.
The new Happy Meal will begin rolling out in September 2011, it will include a quarter or half serving of apple slices, reduced French fries (1.1 ounces) along with the choice of a Hamburger, Cheeseburger or Chicken McNuggets, and choice of beverage, including new fat-free chocolate milk and 1% low fat white milk. Two bags of apple slices will be available for customers who want a side choice of apples only.
McDonald’s says the change will reduce calories in its Happy Meals by as much as 20 percent. The company is also pledging to reduce sugars, saturated fats, sodium and calories in its menu items by 2020.
