Millions of Muslims around the world start Ramadan today, August 1, 2011. It is the annual month of fasting in Islam. This is the time where devotees of Islam abstain from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and other tempting worldly pleasures in order to teach Muslims to be patient, to have empathy to the less fortunate, humility, spirituality, and most of all it reminds Muslims to thank God through prayers and to submit to the will of God.
During Ramadan, Muslims read the entire Qur’an, some Muslims perform it by reciting the special prayers called Tarawih (extra prayers at night during Ramadan).

Ramadan is also the time where Muslims spend more time to charity, giving food or gifts to poor people since it is a festival of giving and sharing.
From dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from drinking and eating. But at sunset, Muslims break their fast through Ramadan dinner known as Iftar, which has become a time for family bonding, and fellowship with friends and communities.
Eid ul-Fitr is a special celebration which marks the end of Ramadan. It is a three day celebration, where Muslims observe the general rituals such as early morning prayer, brushing, taking a shower, putting on their best clothes, applying perfume, having small breakfast, and attending the special Eid prayer (salah). After that, Muslims visits their relatives and friends and give gifts (Eid gifts) to children and immediate relatives.
